India's Location

India is large Country in terms of its size.The Indian Main Land extends between Latitudes 8°4'N and 37°6'N and Longitudes 68°7'E and 97°25'E.

The Tropic of Cancer (23°30) divides the country into two equal parts.In Southwest of the Mainland, Lakshadweep islands are located.In Southeast of the Mainland, Andaman and Nicobar Islands are located.

India's Size

The Indian landmass has an area of 3.28 millions square Km.India is the 7th largest Country of the World.

India Total Land Mass Area = 2.4% of Geographical Area of World

India has a Land Boundary of about 15,200 km and total length of the coastline of the Mainland including the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep islands is 7516.6 Km.

Important Point to Remember: The Latitudinal and Longitudinal extent of the Mainland is about 30°.Despite that, East-West extent appears to be smaller than the North-South extent.

From Gujarat to Arunachal Pradesh, there is time difference of two hours. Hence, Time along the Standard Meridian of India (82°30'E) passing through Mirzapur (in UP) is taken as the Standard Time for whole Country.The Latitudinal extent of India effects the duration of the day and night,when someone moves from South to North.

The Indian Landmass has a Central location between East and West Asia.The Trans Indian Ocean routes which connects the countries of Europe in the West and Countries of East Asia provide a Strategic Central location to India.

India has Eminant position in the Indian Ocean because no other Country has a long Coastline on Indian Ocean as india had.

Important Point to Remember: Since the opening of Suez Canal in 1869, India's distance from Europe has been reduced by 7000 Km.

Answer: Ahmedabad has latitude 23°N and Kolkata has latitude 22.5°N, while Delhi has latitude 28°N. This means that the first two cities lies within the Tropic of Cancer. Tropic of Cancer is a circle of latitude on the earth that marks the apparent position of the sun at the time of Northern solstice.Thus,Sun is not directly overhead in Delhi.
